Sirjanhaari: Meet India’s Specially Abled Chess Champion Malika Handa

The upcoming episode of PTC Punjabi’s TV show ‘Sirjanhaari – Samman Naari Da’ will be aired on November 3, Saturday. The upcoming episode will showcase the journey of two inspiring women – Malika Handa and Khusbir Kaur.

‘Sirjanhaari – Samman Naari Da’, which went on air on September 9, has been getting positive reviews from the audience for showcasing real life stories of women who battled odds to change the world around them.

 Here is the synopsis:

Malika Handa – Handa, a hearing-impaired girl, is one of India’s best chess players. Young girl Handa is from Jalandhar area in Punjab. She was introduced to the game in 2010. She quickly developed an aptitude for the game that outpaced all her peers.

Handa has amassed a list of enviable titles, making her a renowned player at an International level. She has been the national champion in her category thrice, a silver medalist at the World Championship for the deaf, Asian Champion at the Asian Individual Chess Championship for the deaf, and is the current title holder at the World Individual Open Deaf Chess Championships 2016.

Handa overcame the obstacles with her will power and attitude to achieve this milestone at this young age.

Khusbir Kaur – This 21-year-old from Amritsar, Khusbir is now country’s top racewalker. Khusbir is the first Indian woman to clinch a 20 km Race Walk silver medal in the Asian Games by bettering her personal best and setting a new national record in the process.

Born on 9 July 1993, Khusbir came into limelight after winning bronze in the 10,000-metre (6.2 mi) walk race at the 2012 Asian Junior Athletics Championships held at Colombo, Sri Lanka.

She lost her father, Balkar Singh, when she was six. It was her mother, who raised four daughters and a son by sewing clothes and selling milk in nearby villages.

With her passion, Khusbir overcame all the obstacles and she is now a DSP with Punjab Police.
